Bed assembly, every brand

Not only IKEA: we assemble beds of every brand.

Outside IKEA, bed assembly varies widely: a box spring arrives as two pre-built halves, a bedstead flat in boxes, a high sleeper as a pile of tubing. We establish which of the three it is beforehand, because that decides the time, the tools and how much room we need. Legs and levelling are chosen once we see the floor — a springy timber floor asks for something different from a poured floor.

Box spring, bedstead or high sleeper — three entirely different jobs

A box spring is not a bedstead

A box spring arrives as two ready-built boxes that have to form a single plane. No slatted base goes into it, because the spring is in the box itself; anyone who lays something in between removes exactly what was paid for. The work is in the alignment: the two boxes must stand level to the millimetre and be pulled together with the coupling brackets, otherwise you feel the seam down the middle at night. The topper goes on last, once the headboard brackets hang at the right height. With IKEA series the frame works the other way round, see IKEA bed assembly.

You choose the legs once you see the floor

Almost every box spring ships with several sets of legs, and the choice is not only a matter of taste. On carpet a narrow leg sinks in and the bed rocks as you get in and out; that calls for a broad foot or a load-spreading pad. On laminate or a poured floor you want a felt glide instead, or the leg scores a half circle into the floor on its first movement. Over underfloor heating we put no sharp point on the floor and keep the mattress clear of the skirting so the heat can escape. The step-in height changes with it: one set higher makes five to eight centimetres in practice.

Electrically adjustable: motor, cable, socket

An adjustable box spring carries two motors under the bed, with a transformer and a handset. The cables must be able to travel without catching anywhere: we lay them along the frame with a generous loop and clip them to points that do not move. Then we run every position fully up and down with the mattress in place, because a cable that runs free when empty can still pinch under load. The socket has to stay reachable; new wiring is not something we install. We apply the same principle to desks, see office and living room assembly.

High sleepers and bunks: the wall takes part

A high sleeper is the one bed that structurally belongs on the wall. It is narrow, tall, and takes a sideways shove every day from someone climbing the ladder; without anchoring it will start to sway in time. So we fix it into the wall with a fixing suited to the wall type and check that the guard rail rises far enough above the mattress — which depends on the mattress you put in, not the one the maker assumed. The ladder goes on the side where the door is not in the way, and we agree that before anything is fixed.

A branded bed with no manual

Auping, Eastborn, Swiss Sense or a ten-year-old imported bed: the manual is gone and no type number is legible. Then we read the bed itself. The hardware gives away the maker, the holes in the side rail fix the order, and the shape of the corner fitting says whether it pulls or merely carries. We keep the bolts separate per side and photograph every step, so nothing is left over at the end. We use the same method on wardrobe systems, see wardrobes of every brand.

The rest of the bedroom

A bed rarely stands on its own. By arrangement we dismantle the old bed and remove it against the tipping cost, which saves you a trip with a trailer. If a wardrobe or a media wall is also planned, we take it in the same appointment: the heavy parts then go upstairs once and the packaging goes back down in one load. For a wall-hung television in the bedroom, the same story about wall types applies as with a BESTÅ television unit.

Frame solid, no creaking when you move.

Headboard and frame are finished by hand and checked for play; the driver stays on a low clutch setting so nothing strips the chipboard. No scraping joints, no noise on every turn of a sleeper.

Slatted base fitted to spec.

A box spring is not a bed frame. Two separate boxes have to end up as one level surface, you pick the legs only once you see the floor finish, and no slatted base goes in — the suspension sits inside the box. The topper goes on last.

On an electrically adjustable box spring the motor cable and the handset run along the frame, clipped down so nothing gets caught between the moving parts. We run every position fully up and down once before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also take away an old bed?

Yes, by arrangement and for a small disposal fee.

Do you also assemble an electrically adjustable boxspring?

Yes. The motor cable and the handset run along the frame and are fixed down so nothing can catch between the moving parts. We run every position fully up and down before we leave.

What is the difference between a boxspring and a bedstead?

Two separate boxes have to form one flat plane together, and we pick the legs only once we see the floor finish. No slatted base goes in, because the suspension sits in the box itself; the topper goes on last.

How much room do you need around a box spring?

Allow sixty centimetres along both long sides and at the foot, because the two boxes are coupled lying down and then lifted onto the legs together. In a tighter room it usually still works, but we then move the bed into place in parts and it takes longer.

Can you re-level or move a bed that is already standing?

Yes. With a box spring we uncouple the boxes, re-level them and pull them back together. With a bedstead, moving nearly always means dismantling: an assembled frame does not tolerate sideways force and will start creaking if you drag it across the floor.

What do you do on a springy timber floor?

On an old timber floor a broad foot or a spreader pad distributes the weight over several boards, so the bed does not work on a single point. We then re-level every leg with the mattress in place, because a floor that flexes reads differently empty than loaded.
